There are 3 key things that you need to know before starting on a health and fitness journey in 2020. It is important to take a number of different factors into account. This will ensure that you are putting yourself in the best position to succeed with your goals.

2020 has thrown a lot of challenges in our direction and never before has it been more important to take care of individual health. Please know that being your healthy best does not always translate across to things like a successful fight against COVID-19. It certainly can make the job easier when it comes to illness prevention however.

If after seeing how the year has played out, you have come to the conclusion that it is time to make a change with your health and fitness, congratulations!

If it is important to you that this decision is one that lasts a long time, then there are a couple of key areas that you need to understand first.

Exercise lasts a lifetime

#1 – The best results are those that last a lifetime

Whilst it is understandable to want to see a large amount of success quickly, it is actually the wrong way to look at things. Chasing quick fixes and the miracles cures is the best way to stay on the rollercoaster ride of health. Instead, you should look to finally break off this rollercoaster. Always focus on short-term success but use a long-term viewpoint.

Aim for lifestyle change first and the results will come naturally.

With this same idea in mind, it is never smart to go overboard with exercise in the beginning. It is tempting to go straight to 150% from the outset. You do not want to risk injury or any setbacks.

Understand your physical limitations. You don’t want to push yourself any further than your body is capable of. It’s always recommended to build a strong foundation from which you can grow and see sustained success.

#2 – Do you know what you need to eat to see the success you are looking for?

Whether you like it or not, what you eat is going to have upwards of 70% impact on your results. You simply cannot lose weight without making a change to the food that you consume on a daily basis.

When you are looking to make a start on your health and fitness journey, you should make sure that your planned nutrition compliments your training goals.

Once again, it is very important to ensure that you do not go searching for a quick fix. Instead you should be looking for a sustainable long-term solution that will allow you to enjoy all aspects of your life whilst still moving towards your goals.

Education on nutrition is vital. You should make sure to have answers to questions such as:

  • Do I know what a carbohydrate is, how it works and the impact it will have on my success?
  • What is the role of protein in the body and am I having enough of it?
  • What are the difference between good and bad fats?
  • How much alcohol can I consume for my goal and what impact does it have on the body?

The key to success with any health and fitness goals lies in your ability to understand on a deep level the why and how behind the methods.

One you have the answers to the above questions, you then need to take stock of where you are at currently by asking this final question:

  • What changes need to be made today with my food to get to where I want to be?

Once you have answered this question, you will have taken a huge step in the right direction with your health and fitness journey in 2020.

Is your facility COVIDSafe

#3 – Make sure your desired training facility is COVIDSafe

2020 has been a year like no-other. Now more than ever it is important to make sure that you are confident and comfortable with your training environment.

It is simply too risky to be in a facility that is not addressing COVID with the utmost level of attention.

Before starting a health and fitness journey in 2020 you MUST have answers to the following COVID questions:

  • Do they have a designated COVID Safety marshal in place at all times?
  • What is their COVIDSafe plan?
  • How is the frequency of cleaning the facility AND machines?
  • What is the maximum number of people they can have in the facility at any time, and what are they capping it at?

On top of the above questions, you should also pay attention to the small things and ensure you feel comfortable that they are:

  • Making you sanitise on entry
  • Keeping a record of who is in the facility
  • Ensuring that all members have their own towels
  • Have cleaning stations throughout the studio

If you can get answers to all of these questions and observations and you feel comfortable then you should definitely move ahead.

However, at the end of the day, you should always feel comfortable in your training environment. If for any reason you do not feel comfortable, even with all the above questions being answered, then you should listen to your gut and try somewhere else. There are lots of facilities around.

Once again, congratulations on making the decision to improve your health and fitness in 2020!

If you want to ensure that you keep the results that you are looking for long term, then it would be highly advantageous in making sure you have all of the above topics covered before starting up with any program.

Remember, failure to plan is planning to fail.
