As winter rapidly approaching, it is very important to be proactive and boost your immune system. With the ever present threat of COVID-19, ensuring you are your healthy best should be a high priority. If you are consciously doing everything possible to increase your immune levels, then you will face a fast recovery IF you get ANY form of illness.

We are about to enter a natural time for sickness to be around. There are countless viruses and illnesses that tend to pop up around the colder months of the year. It is super important that we ensure our health throughout those months is of the highest priority. An exercise program combined with healthy eating will drastically help.

A responsible nutritional intake that is high in vegetables and vitamins is a daily habit that everyone should be in. Combining this with exercise allows the body to transport those nutrients in a much more efficient fashion. If the body is working effectively throughout the winter months, you will have a higher chance of avoiding illness. If you do get sick, you will put yourself in the best position possible to recover quickly.

So what are some natural ways to boost the immune system?

Vitamins for Immune System

If you incorporate the above vitamins and foods into your daily nutrition you will boost your immune system immediately.

Here are a few top tips to stay healthy this Winter.

Keep moving. Be sure to spend time warming up before you start your exercise as it can take a little longer for your joints to loosen up in the cold weather.

Sunlight. Whenever it is sunny, make sure that you get outside and warm yourself up. Not only does Vitamin D greatly help all areas of your body, but bugs generally do not like heat.

Practice safe habits. Keep distance from others as best possible, and stay home if you are sick. Do not shake hands, and ensure that you have hand sanitizer on you at all times.

Eating well. Be sure your nutrition includes winter fruit and vegetables packed with vitamins and minerals such as sweet potato, green leafy vegetables, beetroot, kiwi fruit, mandarins, bananas, garlic and ginger.

Sleeping well. Proper sleep (eight hours for an adult) can help keep the body’s immune system healthy and fight off colds. Regular, moderate exercise, relaxation techniques and establishing a regular sleep routine may help to promote improved sleep.

Keeping bugs at bay. Wash or sanitise your hands regularly and avoid close contact with someone who has a cold. Keep household surfaces clean as well as kids’ toys when someone in the family has a cold.

Stress and healthy mood. Stress can lower the resistance to nasty bugs by depressing the immune system. Practice mindfulness and other stress-relieving activities to handle the tricky situations a bit better.

Circulation During winter our hands and feet can often feel cold. Our hands and feet are at the extremities of our bodies which means they are the furthest from the heart which is pumping blood around our body to help keep us warm.

Stay hydrated Don’t forget to keep drinking water! As the weather cools down and our thirst decreases it is easy to forget to drink enough water. You still need to aim for about two litres/day of water during winter as it is essential for our body to function.

With winter rapidly approaching, being proactive with your health is incredibly important. We should always be doing everything we can to boost our immune system and stay healthy. The combination of good nutrition and quality exercise is a proven recipe for success. Whilst it is incredibly easy to take the easy option these days, it should be encouraged to take a bit more control over what you are eating.
