What are the best fruits for weight loss? If you are trying to lose a few kg’s then you are most likely up to date on protein and carbs. You have probably swapped out the pasta and rice for broccoli and salad. Exercise has increased and you are feeling good.
But what to do with the fruit?
Depending on who you listen to and what expert catches your eye, fruit can be heaven sent or the devil. It is the argument of high fruit sugar levels (fructose) vs the fact that it is an all-natural product.
The truth is (as always) somewhere in the middle. Fruits can help for weight loss, if they are utilised wisely and like everything else, used in the correct amount of moderation.
So what would 4 of the best fruits be for weight loss?
Grapefruit
Grapefruit is great! Loaded with Vitamin C and fantastic minerals, this sweet and tart fruit has been on the weight loss scene for years. A medium grapefruit has only around 100 calories which makes it a great snack. Grapefruit also contains Naringin, a flavonoid that has been studied because scientists say it increases metabolism.
Generally speaking as well, citrus fruits have also been shown to work as appetite suppressants due to their high fibre and water-based properties.
Hint: Try to have ¼ grapefruit before each meal for a week. You might find that you are not inclined to eat as much throughout the meal, or at the very least, not feel like having anything more than what is on your plate!
Avocado
Technically a fruit, avocados are great for weight loss because they contain healthy fats. As they are relatively energy-dense, avocados can take a long time to burn off and as such make you feel fuller for longer. These wonderful fruits can also help your body absorb more nutrients from other foods that you are eating at the time, which gives you the best of both worlds.
Another wonderful thing? The good fats in avocados can help with the reduction of bad cholesterol (fat) levels! Not all fats are bad and if you get the good fats incorporated into your daily nutrition, then they will help your body in its ability to rid itself of the other bad fats that like to hang around.
Hint: Without going overboard on serving size (remember they are very energy dense), try to incorporate avocado into 1 meal every single day.
Watermelon
We all know it to be true, watermelon is fantastic!
As it is 92% water, this melon is top of the charts when it comes to fruits for weight loss. Its high water content helps you fill up, whilst also giving you high levels of the antioxidant lycopene, which is a powerful antioxidant with many health benefits, including sun protection, improved heart health and a lower risk of certain types of cancer.
Watermelon is a surprisingly versatile ingredient that can be used to beef up a salad, used in a desert and is a wonderful smoothie option. Increasing your watermelon intake is only going to help you with weight loss!
Hint: Try blending up a large quantity of watermelon to create a pure watermelon juice that will last you the day and move you away from feeling like you only need to drink water to stay hydrated.
Berries
Berries are full of massive health benefits and they are incredibly tasty as well!
They are potent sources of antioxidants which essentially act as protectors from the body’s cells from damage. They have been shown to reduce blood sugar and insulin levels after meals. Berries have a massive amount of fibre and are loaded with vitamins and minerals that have been proven to improve metabolism and aid in digestive system efficiency.
Berries are another fruit that can be utilised in a variety of ways throughout the day to complement just about any meal. Add them to your breakfast, mix them in with your salad at lunch or simply snack on a few after dinner to get that sweet craving satisfied.
Hint: If you freeze some fresh berries, they can be used in a smoothie to add a cold element or simply as a great substitute for ice cubes in your water or soda water!
It is important to remember that no matter what your health and fitness goal, the secret to long-lasting success will always be with the creation of a balance that is sustainable. Whilst the above fruits can help with weight loss, it is important to factor them in to a well-rounded nutritional and exercise plan.
