Discover the incredible green powder and its benefits that have made these nutrient-rich supplements a rising trend in the health and wellness industry, promising to boost your diet with essential vitamins and minerals. Green powders have become somewhat of a trend recently with the number of eye-catching advertisements popping up all over the internet. But what are they, and are they really worth my money?

Read on to find out

Green powders, what are they?

Green powders are dietary supplements which are made from powdered forms of various green vegetables fruits, algae and herbs. Often, they are marketed as a convenient way to boost health and nutrient intake with their concentrated source of nutrients.

Typical ingredients include leafy greens such as:

  • kale
  • spinach
  • parsley and
  • collard greens

Also including algae like:

  • spirulina and
  • chlorella

As well as grasses like:

  • wheatgrass or
  • barley

Herbs such as:

  • ginger
  • green tea and
  • turmeric

And finally, common fruits and vegetables including:

  • broccoli
  • beets
  • carrots
  • berries and
  • apples.

The main selling point is often the addition of probiotics, digestive enzymes, fibre vitamins and minerals which aren’t always easily found in many diets. The beneficial addition of probiotics and digestive enzymes is the potential for supporting gut health. Ingredients such as chlorella and spirulina are believed to be detoxifying and remove toxins from the body.

Overall, green powders may provide a nutrient boost especially those who lack vitamins minerals and antioxidants. This high nutrient intake can also support overall energy levels and strengthen the immune system.

So do I need green powder and do they have benefits?

While green powders sound like something that will fix all your health problems, they are absolutely not going to be worth the money for most people. Realistically, at $60+ a pop and with a stringent taste, are you going to eat them every day?

If the answer is no, investing in how you can make the meals you currently eat more nutrient dense may be better use of your money.

Consuming nutrients from whole foods such as a variety of fruits, vegetables and whole grains are generally better absorbed and used by the body in comparison to supplements.

That’s not to say that if you have dietary gaps, a busy lifestyle or want to improve your digestion, increase energy and potentially detox toxins that the added nutrients may be of benefit. But again, these are things you can naturally fix in your own diet.

Green powders – in summary

If you are still thinking green powders may benefit you, it is important to take a few things into consideration. Not all green powders are created equal. It may be worth looking for the quality and the ingredients in the brand you have your eye on. Look for products with minimal additives and no artificial ingredients.

Think about why you want the powder- if you want to increase fibre it may be more beneficial to eat an apple with the content, if you want to increase probiotics be aware there are many different strains and not every strain will be suited to your body.
