From digestion to immunity and mood, probiotics for gut health play a powerful role in helping you stay balanced and energised. When it comes to gut health, probiotics have earned their place in the spotlight—and for good reason. These beneficial bacteria play a key role in digestion, immunity, and overall well-being. Especially when life gets busy or your routine shifts. Whether you’re navigating stress, adjusting your diet, or simply wanting to feel your best day to day, supporting your gut with the right strains can make a noticeable difference.
I’ve just started taking mine again—two weeks out from a trip to Bali—as a little insurance policy for my gut while I’m away. But travel aside, probiotics can be a game-changer for anyone looking to optimise their health from the inside out.
What are probiotics?
Probiotics are live microorganisms—mostly bacteria, but also some yeasts—that offer health benefits when consumed in the right amounts. Think of them as the “good guys” that live in your gut, working hard to keep things running smoothly. They help break down food, support nutrient absorption, produce certain vitamins, and play a key role in maintaining a healthy immune system.
Your gut is home to trillions of microbes, collectively known as the gut microbiome. When it’s in balance, you feel the benefits: better digestion, stronger immunity, and even improved mood and energy levels. But that balance can easily be disrupted—by stress, illness, poor diet, antibiotics, or changes in environment (like travel or a busy holiday season). That’s where probiotics come in. By topping up the levels of beneficial bacteria, they help restore harmony in the gut and support your body’s natural resilience.
You’ll find probiotics in fermented foods like yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut and miso, but many people choose to supplement for a more targeted and reliable dose—especially when preparing for periods of change or added stress.
Choosing the Right Probiotic (and When to Take It)
Not all probiotics are created equal. I even get overwhelmed with all the options on the shelf. Luckily, going through the aisles with the correct knowledge can help you narrow it down.
- Look for specific strains: Different probiotic strains offer different benefits. For gut health and travel support, look for strains like Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, Saccharomyces boulardii, and Bifidobacterium lactis. These have been shown to support digestive balance and help reduce the risk of tummy troubles when your routine changes. Whether that’s travel, stress, or a change in diet.
- Check the CFU count: CFU stands for “colony-forming units”. Which tells you how many live bacteria are in each dose. Aim for a product with at least 10 billion CFUs for general gut support. For targeted needs, like after antibiotics or before travel, you may benefit from a higher dose.
- Go for a quality brand: Choose a probiotic from a reputable brand that does third-party testing and guarantees live cultures through to the expiry date (not just at manufacture). Look for shelf-stable options if you don’t have access to a fridge. Super handy when you’re on the move. Blackmores, BioCeuticals, Lifespace and Ethical Nutrients are all well reputable Australian brands to choose from.
So, when should you take them?
- Two weeks before travel: This gives the bacteria time to populate your gut before you’re exposed to new foods, water, and microbes. (More on this later).
- After a course of antibiotics: Antibiotics wipe out both good and bad bacteria. A probiotic can help restore balance and reduce side effects like bloating or loose stools.
- During times of stress or poor sleep: Your gut and brain are deeply connected, and stress can throw your microbiome off. Probiotics may help support mood, digestion, and immunity.
- With dietary changes: If you’re changing your eating habits—more fibre, plant-based eating, or experimenting with new foods—probiotics can help ease the transition and reduce discomfort.
Why saccharomyces boulardii is a travellers pick.
If you are like me and escaping the cold Sydney winter shortly, I strongly recommend taking some probiotics before you go! With 2 weeks until my Bali trip I have started to take a probiotic, particularly one containing saccharomyces boulardii. It has been extensively studied for its ability to combat harmful bacteria and support a resilient digestive system. Unlike other probiotic strains, this yeast-based probiotic is heat-resistant. This makes it ideal for traveling to warmer climates where storage conditions may be less predictable. It not only helps reduce the severity and duration of traveller’s diarrhoea but also promotes the restoration of beneficial gut bacteria, ensuring your digestive system remains balanced throughout your trip. Bali Belly BYE! Including it in your travel routine provides an extra layer of protection against unexpected digestive issues, a number 1 pick if you are also heading to Bali or any country with unsterilised water.
Probiotics for gut health – conclusion
Probiotics for gut health are a simple yet powerful way to support digestion, immunity, and overall wellbeing—whether you’re travelling or managing daily stress. Whether you’re planning a tropical escape or simply looking to feel more energised and balanced day to day, supporting your gut with the right probiotics can make a big difference. Our digestive system is at the core of so much more than just food breakdown—it impacts our immunity, mood, energy levels, and how we respond to stress and change.
If you’ve been curious about probiotics or wondering whether they’re worth adding to your routine, consider this your sign. Taking a high-quality supplement, especially one with well-researched strains like Saccharomyces boulardii, can help prepare your body for shifts in environment, diet, or pace of life. A great help for travel , but the benefits go well beyond holidays.
