Enjoying Christmas without guilt is all about finding balance. It is about savouring the festive treats and cherishing time with loved ones. It should be about honouring the progress you’ve made throughout the year. As the year draws to a close, it’s the perfect time to pause, reflect, and celebrate all that you’ve achieved over the past 12 months. Whether you’ve made strides in your health, tried new recipes, or simply prioritised nourishing your body in small, meaningful ways, each step is worth acknowledging.

The festive season offers a chance to relax, enjoy time with loved ones, and savour the joy of delicious, seasonal foods. This final blog of the year is all about embracing that balance—being proud of your progress, and enjoying the celebrations with gratitude and mindfulness.

Let’s wrap up the year short and sweet with 5 reminders for the festive period

  1. Memories with friends and family are more important than your weight loss goals. When you are 80 years old, you will appreciate the memories with family and friends over being strict on what you eat. That’s what the other 50 weeks of the year are for! Cherish the big meals, yummy drinks and making memories. They’re what truly nourish the soul.
  2. Remember that one gram of body fat equals roughly 7,700 calories. This means it takes a significant calorie surplus to gain even a single gram of fat. Overindulging for a few days during the festive season won’t lead to drastic changes in your body. For example, enjoying an extra 500 calories per day over a week only adds up to 3,500 calories. Just under half a gram of fat. When you put it into perspective, the occasional treat or festive meal won’t derail your progress. All we need to do is not prolong it and get back on track straight away in the new year.
  3. Weight loss is meant to complement your life and make it better. What will make it worse is stressing about food it’s doing the opposite, so enjoy your baileys coffee and mince pies without guilt!!!
  4. More than likely you have already fallen out of your regular routine with steps, workouts and nutrition this week. If you can aim to hit your step goals and get in some workouts that’s great. However, don’t stress if not. Catch ups with family and friends walking in the Aussie sun is a great way to just get the body moving after a big night moving and you will feel better after.
  5. If you have lots of social events on – aiming for maintenance will be a more appropriate goal over the silly season. Spending months loosing weight and then maintaining it over the festive season is still progress. Don’t forget that!! And don’t stress if the scales initially go up. It is more than likely your body holding on to extra water as a result of extra carbs and this will decrease after.

In summary

Enjoying Christmas without guilt means embracing the joy of the season, indulging mindfully, and focusing on creating meaningful memories rather than stressing over perfection. As the year comes to a close, take a moment to celebrate how far you’ve come and all the effort you’ve put in. Progress isn’t just about big milestones. It’s about showing up, growing, and learning along the way. This festive season, focus on the joy of connection and the memories you’re creating, knowing that balance is key. Be proud of your journey, and step into the new year with gratitude and excitement for what’s to come. Merry Christmas!!!
